When Sarah Durst walks into Holy Cross Health’s
Intensive Rehab Unit in Fort Lauderdale, she doesn’t just start a shift—she steps into her power.
As a Registered Nurse, charge RN, preceptor, and mentor to nurse residents and students, Durst wears a lot of hats (and all of them fit like a glove). But it’s not just her clinical skills that set her apart—it’s her heart.
“I have always had the passion, empathy, and caring nature to assist in making a difference in the lives of others,” she shares. “I helped my parents care for their parents when they were sick until they passed away. I’ve always had the drive to advocate for and help others during their most difficult and vulnerable times.”
With nearly a decade of nursing behind her—and countless lives touched—Durst knows the truth about what really happens during a “typical” day. Spoiler: it’s anything but typical.
“Multi-tasking is an understatement,” she says with a laugh. “What most people do in five days, we do in three. We have people’s lives in our hands—five to six patients at a time. The critical thinking and clinical judgment of a nurse could be the difference between life and death.”
Still, for Durst, the small moments often mean the most.
She’s the nurse who tracks down your favorite book, plays your favorite song, wraps you in a warm blanket, and chats about your family—all while running a unit with the grace of a seasoned leader.
Her secret weapon? Strength.
“I care for each patient as if he or she were a member of my own family,” she says.
Before every shift, Durst arms herself with positive energy, a prayer, and her signature sixth sense—an uncanny ability to multitask under even the most chaotic circumstances. It’s her nursing superpower, saving more than a few days (and lives).
Through it all, she holds tight to one invaluable lesson she’s learned from her patients and their families:
“Everyone is fighting a battle you know nothing about. So, as a healthcare professional, being kind is imperative.”
Sarah Durst doesn’t just clock in for her shifts—she shows up with her whole heart. And that’s a power that can’t be measured in hours.
