Celebrating 50 Years of Pediatric Nursing Excellence: A Conversation with PNCB Chair Amanda Vickers

As the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board

(PNCB) marks its 50th anniversary, the organization is not just commemorating a milestone—it’s spotlighting half a century of leadership, innovation, and dedication to the highest standards of care for children, adolescents, and young adults. At the forefront of this celebration is Amanda Vickers, DNP, RN, CPNP-PC, PMHS, current Chair of the PNCB Board of Directors, who shares insights on the board’s legacy, impact, and aspirations for the future of pediatric nursing.

Reflecting on Five Decades of Progress

“For me, this milestone is a moment of immense pride,” Vickers says. “It’s a testament to decades of dedication to elevating the standards of care for children.” The founding of PNCB in 1975 came at a time when pediatric nursing lacked the depth of specialization it now commands. Over five decades, the landscape has transformed with the rise of neonatal intensive care, pediatric subspecialties, and evidence-based practice. “The growth of PNCB mirrors the profession’s advancement,” she adds. “It demonstrates a commitment to lifelong learning and a passion for providing the highest quality care.”

PNCB’s expanding suite of certifications—including CPN, CPNP-PC, CPNP-AC, and PMHS—has been instrumental in validating expertise across subspecialties and supporting the profession’s evolution. The board’s influence is evident in every setting, from hospital bedsides to research labs, outpatient clinics, and educational institutions.

Shaping Pediatric Care Through Certification

With over 58,000 certified professionals, PNCB’s reach is vast—and so is its impact. “Certification enhances patient safety and drives better outcomes,” Vickers explains. Certified pediatric nurses bring a high level of specialized knowledge to their work, which reduces errors and allows for more targeted, effective care—particularly critical for children with complex or chronic conditions.

Vickers notes that the rigorous standards maintained by PNCB help advance individual careers and the credibility of pediatric nursing overall. “PNCB certification is a professional mark of distinction recognized throughout the industry,” she says, emphasizing annual renewal and ongoing education—offering more than 100 hours of online CE—to ensure pediatric nurses stay current with best practices and new evidence.

Meeting the Moment: Mental Health and Holistic Care

As pediatric nurses face the growing challenge of addressing youth mental health, PNCB has expanded its support through education and credentialing. “The PMHS certification confirms that APRNs have the competencies needed to manage pediatric mental health in primary care,” says Vickers. Along with continuing education modules, adolescent-focused microcredentials, and resources like webinars and practice tools, this initiative aims to integrate mental health into routine pediatric care.

“Every practice should have a validated expert who can confidently and effectively help children and families with these concerns,” Vickers adds. “This is crucial for early intervention and holistic care.”

Advancing DEIB in Pediatric Nursing

A critical focus for PNCB has been embedding diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and accessibility (DEIBA) into every facet of its work. “We are strategically working toward ensuring the profession reflects the diverse populations we serve,” says Vickers. From publishing the largest demographic profile of certified pediatric nurses to offering scholarships and inclusive representation across marketing and educational tools, PNCB is pushing for broader representation and greater equity in access to certification.

“We want every nurse to feel seen, supported, and empowered,” she emphasizes.

Preparing for the Future of Pediatric Nursing

The next 50 years promise even more transformation. Technology, social determinants of health, and global trends are reshaping the field—and PNCB is ready. The organization is expanding its educational offerings with certificate and micro-credential programs like ACTivate (focusing on adolescent care) and is exploring global partnerships to bring U.S.-based education to international nurses.

“PNCB keeps a pulse on emerging trends and the challenges nurses face,” Vickers says. “We’re committed to transforming pain points into tangible support.”

Leading with Purpose

Vickers’ journey into leadership was shaped by mentors who recognized her passion for service. “I’m standing on the shoulders of giants who paved the way,” she says. Serving on the board has allowed her to contribute to shaping pediatric healthcare nationally while growing as a leader.

Her message to early-career nurses considering certification is clear: “Certification is an essential step—but it’s just the beginning. Engage with your professional community. Stay curious. Give back. The next generation of nurses will benefit from your investment.”

Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future

PNCB’s 50th-anniversary celebrations at NAPNAP and SPN conferences recognize pediatric nurses’ legacy and collective contributions to child health. While not live-streamed, commemorative videos and digital highlights will be available for all to share in the celebration.

As for the future, Vickers envisions a world where every child receives exceptional, evidence-based care—and every pediatric nurse is empowered to deliver it. “PNCB will continue to be a driving force, ensuring that excellence in pediatric nursing is not just maintained—but elevated,” she says.

Fifty years in, the mission remains clear: to support pediatric nurses as they support the youngest and most vulnerable patients. The work is far from over, but with leaders like Amanda Vickers at the helm, the future is in compassionate, capable hands.
