Pride in Practice: Home Health Nurse Rich Magnuson Honored for Heroism, Compassion, and Living Authentically

This week, Daily Nurse proudly recognizes Rich Magnuson, RN, as our Nurse of the Week, honoring his 17-year legacy of compassionate home health care and his courageous journey toward authenticity.

A registered nurse with BAYADA Home Health Care

’s Willow Grove, Pennsylvania office, Magnuson was also named BAYADA’s 2023 Registered Nurse National Hero of the Year—a reflection of his extraordinary impact on the lives of his clients and colleagues alike.

To those he cares for, Magnuson is more than a nurse. He’s a steady hand, a trusted friend, and—often—a reason to smile. Known for his warm humor, boundless empathy, and “lover-of-the-little-things” mindset, Magnuson brings comfort to every visit. His ability to find joy and possibility in even the smallest moments has made him a true hero in the eyes of those he serves.

But Magnuson’s story extends beyond the bedside. As Pride Month begins, his journey illuminates the powerful intersection of personal identity and professional purpose and the critical role inclusion plays in empowering nurses to bring their whole selves to the job.

“I knew from a young age there was something ‘wrong’ with me. It wasn’t until college I realized the problem was my confused and conflicted feelings about my sexual identity,” Magnuson shared. “Coming from South Dakota, where being openly gay felt unsafe, I got married, had children, and stayed in the closet, like many others from my generation. My journey of coming out at age 60 was long and challenging, but knowing I worked for an accepting company reassured me.”

At BAYADA, where compassion, excellence, and reliability form the foundation of care, Magnuson found more than just a workplace—he found community and affirmation. As the organization marks its 50th anniversary in 2025, its commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) continues to shape a culture where every team member is valued for who they are.

“Having an ERC at BAYADA confirms the company’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB),” Magnuson said of the BAYADA PRIDE Employee Resource Council. “It makes me feel safe at work. Being authentic means I have the freedom to be open and honest about myself, without censoring every word or gesture.”

Magnuson’s authenticity doesn’t just make him a stronger person—it makes him a better nurse. His journey proves that when clinicians are empowered to be their whole selves, the quality of care flourishes. His patients benefit from his empathy, honesty, and deep emotional intelligence; his story serves as a guiding light for colleagues navigating similar journeys.

When nurses feel supported and seen, they can lead with their hearts—creating space for healing, trust, and deeper human connection.

As we celebrate Pride Month, Magnuson’s voice stands out as both a tribute to progress and a call to action: that nursing is at its best when it reflects the full spectrum of humanity.

For his unwavering dedication, for his bravery in living authentically, and for the joy and dignity he brings to home health nursing, we are honored to spotlight Rich Magnuson as this week’s Daily Nurse Nurse of the Week.
