Alesia Thompson doesn’t just lead nurses—she creates them.
With nearly four decades of nursing experience, Thompson, RN, MSN, is the Clinical Director of a bustling unit at University Medical Center
in New Orleans. But if you ask her what her superpower is, she won’t mention her leadership title or years of experience. Instead, she beams and says, “I make Nurses.”
And she means it—literally. All three of her children—Leah, Calvin, and Lauren—followed in her footsteps and chose nursing after considering other paths. “Now we’re all in the profession together, and I couldn’t be prouder,” she says.
Compassion in Her Core
What first drew Thompson to nursing wasn’t a dramatic moment—it was something quieter but more powerful: a deep, abiding compassion for others. That same force has powered her 39.5-year career through triumphs and tragedies alike.
One of those unforgettable moments came in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. “I cared for patients through home health when so many had lost everything,” she recalls. “Being able to show up for them during such a vulnerable time reminded me that nursing is about more than medicine—it’s about humanity and hope.”
The Secret to Her Power
Thompson’s not one for shortcuts. She pours thought into every decision she makes because every action is an opportunity to uplift others. Sometimes, it’s as simple as encouraging someone unsure about their future: “Expressing my belief in them and sharing my feelings of them becoming a nurse one day” is one of the quiet ways she changes lives.
Her secret weapon? “ALWAYS give your best. You never know when you might help, and I would hope the same type of care I’ve delivered to others.”
It’s that kind of presence that families remember. One once told her that just listening made all the difference. For Thompson, that moment proved that the strongest care doesn’t always come with a stethoscope—it can come in silence.
The Woman Behind the Scrubs
So, what’s in her power kit? “Prayer, a clear mind, and GOD.” That trio grounds her through long shifts, challenging days, and tough decisions. And when she needs an anthem to push through? Destiny’s Child’s “I’m A Survivor” is always on cue.
Even off the clock, the nurse in her doesn’t switch off. “Analyzing and assessing things” is just second nature.
A Message from the Heart
Thompson doesn’t miss a beat when asked what The Power of Nurses means to her: “Saving lives, one day at a time. You never know how being kind and listening to someone in their most vulnerable time can make a tremendous impact on their life.”
And could she send a message to every nurse?
“Keep your heart tender. Keep your minds open, never judgmental. Always provide the very best care that you can, because one day, you may be in the place of your patient. Lead with compassion for others.”
She recharges with a quiet drive home, reflecting on how to improve—never coasting, always striving.
A Hope-Fueled Future
As nursing evolves, Thompson hopes it stays anchored in what matters most: heart.
“Nursing is a calling where compassion and clinical excellence work hand in hand,” she says. “I hope nurses are empowered and respected, not only for the care they provide but the wisdom they carry.”
In Thompson’s world, being a nurse means more than showing up. It means making more nurses by leading with love, lifting others, and turning compassion into a career-long legacy.
