Inside NJCU’s Revamped Nursing Education Center: A Bold Step Toward Solving New Jersey’s Nursing Shortage

As New Jersey stares down one of the most severe nursing shortages in the country, New Jersey City University

(NJCU) is making a decisive move to train the next generation of nurses—better, faster, and with more real-world preparation than ever before.

On June 12, 2025, NJCU reopened its newly revamped Nursing Education Center (NEC) inside Rossey Hall, unveiling a high-tech hub built to prepare students for the evolving demands of modern healthcare. The upgrade comes at a critical time: the state is projected to face a shortage of 10,000 nurses by 2030 and currently ranks third in the nation for nursing deficits—behind only California and Texas.

The state-of-the-art NEC is more than a cosmetic overhaul. It’s an investment in workforce readiness, built to immerse students in hands-on, high-fidelity simulations that mirror hospital environments. From virtual reality tools to medication management systems found in real hospitals, NJCU’s new setup is designed to bridge the gap between classroom learning and bedside care.

“As New Jersey faces a critical nursing shortage, NJCU is positioned as a leader in experiential learning strategies to address this challenge head-on,” said Dr. Esther Nir, J.D., Ph.D., Interim Dean of the College of Professional Studies.

“These state-of-the-art facilities and technologies will not only ensure our graduates are well-prepared to meet the demands of modern healthcare but will also help us attract and retain more students in our nursing programs.”

Among the NEC’s most notable upgrades:

A fully equipped medication room with an OmniCell system and SimCart Elite, simulating hospital-grade medication management to train students in safe administration practices.
A dedicated staging space that allows faculty to pre-organize supplies and streamline simulation scenarios.
A nursing prioritization room that teaches students to navigate the complexities of delivering quality care to diverse patient populations.
Cutting-edge virtual reality simulation using Oculus devices, offering immersive learning experiences to strengthen clinical decision-making and critical thinking.
Laerdal Cloud Capture with AV conversion for recording and playback—essential for skills assessment and feedback.

The effort was a team-wide lift. Dr. Nir credited the Nursing Department’s faculty and staff — Drs. Nelda Ephraim, Joyce Wright, Denise Branchizio, Shandra Johnson, Professor Maria Montanez, and professional staff members Samantha Younker and Sakshi Chahaun — for helping shape the vision into reality.

“The Nursing Department’s entire faculty and staff… truly stepped up to meet and exceed the needs of our students,” Dr. Nir said.

For nursing students—and the future of healthcare in New Jersey—NJCU’s commitment sends a strong message: immersive, hands-on training isn’t just the gold standard; it’s essential. In the face of mounting pressure to fill the nursing pipeline, NJCU is rising to meet the challenge.
